Celebrating over 40 years of transplant success, the Newcastle Hospitals have performed more than 1,200 kidney transplants, helping to save lives and give people a better quality of life.

Today, all renal care and kidney-related surgery for adults takes place at the Freeman Hospital where we carry out around 100 kidney transplants every year; about 70 of these are transplants are from a living donor. In 2011, we transplanted 64 kidneys from live donors Рthe third highest total out of 25 transplant centres in the UK.

We provide the renal transplant service to the Northern Region, with kidney patients travelling from their home renal units in James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, Sunderland Royal Infirmary and Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle for their transplant operations and first weeks of care, before transferring back to their own doctors in their own unit once stable.
